VISION:  All families are able to connect to resources and opportunities that promote healthy lives and strong communities.

What is a Family Resource Center:

Who Can Get Help?

The Family Resource Center (FRC) serves anyone who lives in that community. There are no income qualifications to use the Family Resource Center, although some referrals to other services may be limited according to income guidelines. The Family Resource Center serves children, teens, parents, single adults, and seniors.

What Help can I get at the Family Resource Center:

Resources/Referrals: All of the Family Resource Center sites offer resource and referral services. Individuals may call the Family Resource Center for information and referrals to resources in the community which may be able to help meet basic needs or provide other forms of assistance. Staff is available to assist families with identifying needs and to help them locate the resources to potentially meet those needs. Families with minor or school aged children can enroll in the Family Success Program.

Family Success Program: The Family Success Program is a voluntary program that consists of an initial discussion to determine the needs of the family and then links the family with appropriate community and government resources. A plan is made with the family to help set goals and action steps necessary to meet those goals. The plan is tailored to address the unique needs of the family and will likely require additional appointments. Families who are taking action and making progress towards attaining their goals may be eligible for additional services.

Parenting Education

The Family Resource Center conducts two parenting education programs and can link families with other parent education programs in the community.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES teaches problem-solving skills and effective communication techniques to parent(s)/guardian(s) and youth (ages 10-14 years old). In addition, participants will learn how to handle family stress, set goals and build positive relationships. Classes are free and babysitting is provided for younger children (ages 2-9 years old) while their parent(s)/guardian(s) and older sibling(s) are attending the class. The class is held one night a week for seven weeks and a light dinner is served. Please see the schedule below for locations, dates and times. For additional information contact the numbers listed below or call Teresa, 333-3525. Classes are offered in English and in Spanish.

PARENTING WISELY is available at all five FRC sites. Parenting Wisely is a self-administered, computer-based program that teaches parents of 12 to 18 year old children important skills for combating risk factors that may contribute to youth substance use and abuse. The Parenting Wisely program uses a risk-focused approach to reduce family conflict and child behavior problems including stealing, vandalism, defiance of authority, bullying, and poor hygiene. The Parenting Wisely program is free and available in both English and Spanish and is designed to:

On-going Support:

Staff members of the Family Resource Center provide on-going support and case management services. They are available to help individuals/families with budgeting, goal setting, and problem solving. They are available to assist you in obtaining services through advocacy and interventions with other community agencies. They are available if you just need to talk to someone about problems or issues in your life.

Differential Response Program: An early intervention and prevention program that allows Washoe County Department of Social Services (CPS) to link at-risk families to services in their community. If CPS receives information that your family may need support or assistance, a referral may be made to the Differential Response Program. A member of the differential response team will visit your home to conduct an assessment of the information contained in the report and offer services and linkages to community resources.

Family Resource Centers:

Staff:

All Family Resource Center sites have bilingual (Spanish/English) staff available. Directors have varied degrees in teaching, social work and family studies. Many use parents, volunteers, and interns to help in the office or on special projects.
